Presence and abundance of Culex tarsalis along elevation-climate gradients

In 2006, we collected mosquitoes along two elevation-climate gradients in Larimer County: the Poudre River corridor and the Big Thompson River corridor

Two CDC light traps baited with dry ice (to produce carbon dioxide to attract mosquitoes) were used in each site

Traps were placed in areas with cottonwood or willow along rivers or streams

Sites were trapped every 2 weeks from June-September

All sites along the Poudre River corridor produced at least one Cx. tarsalis but the abundance was very low above 6,000 ft and the mosquitoes caught at these higher elevations appeared late in the season.

Only sites up to Drake (6,100 ft) produced Cx. tarsalis along the Big Thompson corridor. The mosquito was abundant up to Viestenz Smith Mountain Park.

A single Cx. tarsalis was collected from Rocky Mountain National Park (close to the Hollowell Park parking area). It is quite possible that this mosquito originated from a lower elevation and had been brought into the park with a vehicle.

Many mosquito species are common only at low elevations but others are adapted to the mountains
